The New York Times just fixed an incredibly annoying “feature” on its website, and I’m so grateful I wanted to issue a public thank you. It used to be that double-clicking a word on nytimes.com would make that word’s definition pop up in a new box. I’m not sure why, but I found this excruciatingly irritating. Every time I tried to highlight some text, a nasty little box would pop up explaining what “this” means.

But now the problem is solved. Ingeniously solved, at that. Now, if you double click a word, a tiny little question mark pops up and politely offers to tell you the definition, if you so desire. Wow! They turned a useless annoyance into a useful feature. Well done!
